Oops! Files turning to shortcuts? Get Help!!!

Files turned into Shortcuts solution finally simplified

Trojan, a name given to the virus that turns files/folders in a USB stick into a shortcut. Using USB has been one of the easiest means of transferring data since it is easy to use and the conveniency of carrying anywhere due to its portability. Recently, a friend of mine plugged in his USB on his laptop after he had used it on someone else’s. Surprisingly, all files and folders had turned into a shortcut.  The problem was solved and I think it’s worth sharing.

How do I stop this from happening in the first place?

  • Use a very good and updated antivirus.
  • Avoid collecting files in an unprotected computer system.
  • When downloading from the internet, make sure the file is secured. Always use virustotal to scan before downloading

Usefulness of this tutorial

  • It will save a lot of money
  • It will boost the security hormone of the computer user
  • It will save a lot of hard-gotten files from damage since some think the next option is to format the computer system.

Steps to remove the virus and regain back your files.

  1. Plug in the infected USB drive.
  2. Make sure Folder properties are made visible. Folder > Right Click> Properties>Check Hidden files.
  3. Open the task manager > Process Tab > End WSCPRIPT.EXE
  4. Now let’s go to the registry. Click onStart > Type in “regedit” and press enter.
  5. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER and click, then click on Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Run
  6. A list will be displayed. Any file(s) that ends with .vbs should be deleted and also take note of the file location since the file will also be deleted.
  7. After it has been deleted from both File Location and Regedit, Run Command Prompt by typing “cmd” in start + Enter
  8. Now type in this attrib –h –r –s /s /d I:\*.* “ I:\” denotes the infected drive. Replace with your external drive alphabet… might be F:\ or G:\

Tested on Windows 7 and worked perfectly well
